The wait is almost over. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will officially open on December 11, 2026, adding another major cultural institution to Saadiyat Cultural District and marking a new chapter for the UAE’s cultural landscape.

But before becoming one of the world’s most recognisable museum names, Guggenheim was first a family name.

Who was Solomon Guggenheim?

Solomon R. Guggenheim was an American industrialist and art collector, born into a wealthy family whose fortune was built largely through the mining industry.

What is perhaps more surprising is that he only developed a serious interest in modern art later in life, in his sixties.

His meeting with Hilla Rebay in 1927 changed everything. The German-born artist and advocate of abstract art introduced Guggenheim to European avant-garde artists, including Vasily Kandinsky, and helped shape his interest in non-objective art.

Rebay became his artistic adviser and later the first director of his museum.

In 1937, Guggenheim established the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Two years later, the Foundation opened the Museum of Non-Objective Painting in New York.

After Solomon Guggenheim’s death, the institution was renamed the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Its iconic spiral building on Fifth Avenue, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, opened in 1959.

From New York to Bilbao

The Guggenheim story later expanded internationally.

In Venice, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents the collection assembled by Solomon Guggenheim’s niece.

Then, in 1997, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened in Spain in a spectacular building designed by Frank Gehry.

The museum became such a powerful symbol of Bilbao’s transformation that the phenomenon became known as the “Bilbao Effect”, the idea that a major cultural institution can contribute to reshaping the image and attractiveness of a city.

Frank Gehry is also the architect behind Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

What will make Guggenheim Abu Dhabi different?

Although Gehry’s architectural signature is immediately recognisable, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has been designed specifically for its location.

One of its most distinctive features is a series of ten sculptural cones inspired by traditional wind towers from the Gulf. They help create shade and encourage natural ventilation, adapting the architecture to Abu Dhabi’s climate.

Located between land and sea, the museum also reflects Abu Dhabi’s landscape, light and position as a crossroads between cultures.

Its collection will focus on modern and contemporary art from the 1960s onwards, combining strong connections to the region with an international perspective.

When does Guggenheim Abu Dhabi open?

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens on December 11, 2026.

The museum is set to become one of the key institutions in Saadiyat Cultural District, alongside Abu Dhabi’s growing network of museums and cultural destinations.
